Plastics and Human Addiction

After 2019 yesterday we struggled together to voice the environmental crisis that is being experienced by Indonesia and the rest of the world. We still have to continue this struggle this year. The #KrisisIklim problem is still in the world spotlight, after it held the climate change conference in Madrid in early December 2019, which ended. It turns out that the commitment of countries around the world to reduce emissions is still weak.

However, we shouldn’t be weak too. We must continue to strengthen our commitment to save Indonesia’s environment and nature. There are many crucial issues that we have to face, which require immediate action and your full support. Here are some focus of Greenpeace Indonesia’s campaign in 2020, and what concrete actions you can take. Because every effort we make to protect the earth, no matter how small it matters.

Plastic. Issues that are very close to the community. Plastic, which is always used every day, causes us to become dependent on its existence. 60% of the world’s plastic is single-use plastic, which will be thrown away after use. After that, where did the trash go? Where else if not in water areas such as rivers, lakes and seas, in Indonesia? The reduction of single-use plastics is very important because in Indonesia, plastic waste management is still low and the company’s responsibility for their waste is still minimal.

However, there is good news in early 2020. The Indonesian government announced its commitment at the World Economic Forum 2020 that Indonesia would be free from plastic pollution by 2040 by promoting a circular economy. This is in line with Greenpeace Indonesia’s major focus this year, encouraging fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies to commit to reducing single-use plastic production for their products and implementing re-use and re-fill concepts. This commitment can also slow down the #KrisisIklim rate because in its production, plastics also contribute to carbon emissions into the air.

What actions can you take? Apart from continuing to urge corporations to stop producing plastic once, you can also start changing your habits by bringing a water bottle with you every time you travel, bringing your own container when you want to buy food, and stopping the use of single-use plastic bags.
