The Role of the Press in Guarding Dignified Elections

BANJARMASIN – Towards to the 2020 parallel Regional Election in South Kalimantan, the Indonesian Journalists Association and General Election Observers Society and Press (MAPPILU PWI) held a seminar on “The Role of the Press in Guarding a Dignified Election”, on Monday (14/9/2020) at the PWI Building of South Kalimantan.

It was attended by Head of PWI Centre, Atal Sembiring Depari, Head of PWI Kalsel, Zainal Hilmi, Governor of South Kalimantan, H Sahbirin Noor, South Kalimantan’s press figures, editor leader of print media, electronics and cyber and Head of SMSI South Kalimantan, Anang Fadhilah.

Head of MAPPILU PWI Centre, Suprapto Sastro Atmojo, said that the press is the fourth pillar of democracy and it’s expected to be Wacthdog (guard), Legislative, Judiciary, Executive and Press.

“For this reason, the Press must not be included in the political and governmental system, but have to socio-political power, influence policies and control for the well being of the people,” he said.

Mappilu PWI is an organization that has activities for monitoring, education, advocacy, research, and socialization about the elections (Pilkada).

“PWI Mappilu will maintain and guard for healthy and cultured elections. So as to create a society that is prosperous, dignified, ethical, and devout. The output of the press product is writing/drawing/photo/caricature which obeys to the KEJ and the Press’ Law.

The output of control or supervision that carried out by Mappilu is irregularities reports, or complaints that are submitted to the KPU, Bawaslu, or other authorities and also can be reported, “he added.

Mappilu is also involved in education, training, outreach, and advocacy that related to for members and the public. anang
