Martapura – The Central Executive Board of the National Indonesian Peasants Union (DPP SPI) declared five Food Sovereign Areas (KDP-SPI) at the same time in five provinces throughout Indonesia, Saturday (31/10/2020). The five provinces are, West Sumatra, Lampung, Yogyakarta, East Java and South Kalimantan.
In South Kalimantan, which is designated as a Food Sovereign Area is in Panggalaman Village, West Martapura District, Banjar Regency.
This was determined by the Regional Management Board of the Indonesian Peasants Union South Kalimantan (DPW SPI) and was declared directly on the same day.
The Chief Executive of the SPI South Kalimantan Region, Dwi Putra Kurniawan, said that Panggalaman Village was chosen as KDP-SPI together with two neighboring villages, namely: Sungai Batang Village and Sungai Rangas Village in Martapura Barat District, Banjar Regency.
The three villages are food-producing villages and South Kalimantan food barns. It can even be said to support the food of other provinces, namely Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan. Penggalam Village also cultivates a lot of fish, laying ducks, ducks and chickens.
“Various kinds of food plants are here. Starting from rice farmers, fruit and vegetables, as well as fish and other livestock commodities.
In this peat swamp land, local farmers apply local farming knowledge in farming.
Agricultural mechanization has also begun to enter with modern agricultural equipment in accordance with the character of the peat swamp land.
So, the source of the community’s economy here is from agricultural products. We, SPI South Kalimantan, conclude that Penggalaman Village is a Food Sovereign Area, “Dwi said.
Dwi added that of the 7,112 people in Panggalaman Village, 90 percent of them are farmers.
The Head of West Martapura Sub-district, Sumardi S.sos, also emphasized that agricultural commodities, even farmers in the fish cultivation sector in particular, have been able to produce 5 tons of fish a day.
The head of the Panggalaman Farmers Group, Mbah Sarijan, or the local community calling Mbah Jan, is happy that the Penggalaman Village he lives in has been selected as one of the Food Sovereign Areas in Indonesia.
“Representing the farmers in Panggalaman Village, especially the farmer groups, is very grateful that the Indonesian Peasants Union has made this village a Food Sovereign Area.
We hope that in the future the rights of farmers can be achieved through government policies that prioritize the interests of farmers, “said Mbah Jan.
